Cemeteries, Caskets, Coffins, Urns

Woodand Burial Sites are becoming popular in the U.K. for a number of reasons. In addition to the ecological benefits, they are also attractive to those who will not have family nearby to tend the grave. They typically don't permit headstones or markers, and burials are done in wooden, wicker, or bamboo caskets, or even a simple woolen shroud. Since burial vaults aren't used, embalming is forbidden. A tree is planted near the grave, so eventually a wildlife-supporting woodland will be created. And since it's a cemetery, the land should be somewhat protected from development.

Birdsong Green Burial Site in Lincolnshire, U.K. is one of the new "Woodland" cemeteries. They also show a nice selection of wicker, bamboo, and other natural caskets.

Final Passages offers "education for personal and legal rights concerning home or family-directed funerals and final disposition (burial and cremation)." Even if you aren't going to fill out mean aunt Tillie's death certificate, prepare her for burial yourself, pitch her shrouded body in your sedan trunk and head for the nearest public park, isn't it comforting to know you could?
